Peugeot 508 Allroad revealed

Peugeot reveals rugged new estate, with diesel hybrid drivetrain

French giant Peugeot is taking the fight to Audi's Allroad models. This is the 508 RXH - a range - topping version of the 508 SW family estate which combines jacked-up suspension and rugged bodywork with a revolutionary new diesel hybrid powertrain.

The model is higher and wider than the 508 SW. As well as the raised ride height, scuff plates and plastic sills, the RXH is set apart by two sets of three 'lion claw' LED running lights. These flank a floating grille - the centrepiece of the firm's latest design language.

Under the skin, power comes from the 2.0-litre HDi Hybrid4 drivetrain. This will be offered in the 3008 crossover from later this year, and also features is sister company Citroen's new DS5. The set-up uses a diesel engine to propel the front wheels and an electric motor to turn the rears, making the RXH four-wheel drive. The HYbrid4 200bhp and 450 Nm of torque.

There's also a zero-emissions all-electric mode, which plays a big part in the car's impressive 67.2mpg combined economy and 109g/km CO2 figures.

In keeping with the model's positioning at the top of the 508 range, equipment is set to be generous, with electric front seats, a head-up display, 18-inch alloy wheels and a panoramic glass roof among the long list of standard features.

There's no word on prices yet, but the 508 RXH will be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. It's then scheduled to arrive in dealers here in spring next year.
